Monte Redondo is a group in the Central Area of Guatemala, situated about 20 kms from Guatemala City. The first time we visited them, we learned that isolation has nothing to do with distance measured in kilometers. They are a group of 20 women that joined Wakami, when it was only a dream. They had no possible way to generate income in their community and could not go out to work, because all of them have small children. So they had to survive on their husband's salaries that in most cases were not the minimum wage.
Today they produce Wakami’s Earth Bracelet, besides taking care of their children and their homes, being able to provide extra money for their families. Sandra Solares, the group leader puts it this way:
“Wakami is a dream-come true for my community. I feel satisfied to be the bridge that makes it possible for women in my community to generate income; this not only makes them feel important, but also helps them provide a better life to their kids. For me, Wakami is the force that gives me the opportunity to keep studying my communication career at the university”.
