This group is in a village near the city of Antigua Guatemala, named San Lorenzo Pastores. They became our first Wakami Group in 2006, and as Monte Redondo, they got to us through a nutritional program for mothers of children under 5 years of age that was ending. At that time, the women of Concepción knew they had to provide better food for their children, but with no income it was out of their possibilities. They have been producing Wakami products since then, and after they were organized and received the incubation workshops of Kiej de los Bosques, they also managed to start a small bakery and a convenience store where they sell bread and first necessity products. Today they have two sources of income: One from the production of Wakami´s Earth Bracelet and another one from their own business! Matilde is the leader of this group, she is a very active woman that knows exactly what she wants for her, her family and her community: “It has taken a lot of effort to start a business, but now, everybody in the village admires us, because we have been able to start something, that today is small, but in the future is going to be something really big. We know we still have to make a lot of sacrifices and work hard, but we are happy, because we can see the results everyday”. |
