Santa Elena Barillas

We started our relationship with this group in 2006 by an alliance with the office of the former First Lady of Guatemala, with the objective to generate income to groups that were graduating from the “Creciendo Bien” program.

The women in this group had been capacitated by the program to ensamble jewelry, but had not been able to sell what they were producing. We started working with them to produce Wakami products.

The first times we met, we had our training sessions in the park, because their houses were not accesible; and although the sun made it difficult to work sometimes, we managed to produce some of Wakami´s first collections with them.

Now, Doña Adela, the leader of the group, is the one that trains the women to do the new products and they have the opportunity to increase the income without leaving their houses and children. Doña Adela is is an example of what a leader with commercial vision should be:

“We are very excited because we have good benefits, that is why we enjoy producing so much, a little piece of our heart goes in every product: Because we feel happy to have a job!”
